Analysis of promo videos part 2

After doing the examples together as a group in the last post i then picked two promotional videos of the internet myself and analyzed them the same way.

The first video i looked at was for a local skate shop in Los Angeles called Mainline Skate Shop. In terms of content you can see there are no presenters and the video is made up of graphics at the beginning, clips of skaters doing various tricks and then titles over the live footage at the beginning and end. All the skaters are from and footage is filmed in the local area of the shop to show there a part of the skate community there and bring in the kind of business associated with this.

For style it used an urban amateur style. The video is mostly medium paced, with a section of fast paced shots and cuts in a section in the middle. There is also a lot of repeats of footage and same scenes from different angles to show off the tricks the skaters are doing. To help with this as well there are some different than normal camera shots such as cameras following the skaters whilst there riding. The video is mostly made up of long shots, to set the scene for the skaters and show more of the local area where the filming has been done.

There is a basic structure to the video, it introduces the shop, then the skaters, then footage of the skaters doing tricks in the local area wearing/using there products and then end titles suggesting more videos are to come.

For sound there is a soundtrack of a music track by the band MGMT. This ties in to the modern urban theme of the video and the fact that the skating scene and music scene go well together. There are some added effects on the graphics at the beginning but all live sound is cut out from the skate footage.

The second video i looked at was for a new camera from the Fujifilm company called the X10. In terms of content there are no presenters, the video is made up of lots of computer graphics, some animation and footage of the camera and people using it. The animation is to show the functionally of the camera and the workings you can't normally see inside. Titles and technical terms are often placed over the graphics. Plenty of examples of photos taken by the camera are included too.

For style it used an professional technical style. The video is mostly medium paced, with a section of fast paced shots to show the different functions of the camera. There are some transition effects used on the text. There is a mix of close up shots to show the detailing on the camera and longer shots to show people using the camera.

There is a structure to the video, it introduces the camera, shows functions, shows examples of photos taken from it and finishes on whats different on this camera from others.

For sound there is a prominent voice over of a male voice. It is a softer voice than previous examples we have looked at though, making it easier to listen to as he goes into a lot of technical detail about the camera. There is a light jazz instrumental track in the background, but it doesn't distract from the information given. Camera click generated sound effects are added whenever titles are put up onto the screen to bring attention to the new information.
